Why Do Some Pregnant Women Crave Pickles and Ice Cream?

No one really knows why some pregnant women crave pickles and ice cream, or any other seemingly strange food combination. There are a number of theories about pregnancy cravings, but it has been difficult to pin down a solid biological or psychological reason for cravings. Doctors do generally agree that pregnancy cravings are very normal, and that unless a craving is unhealthy, satisfying the craving is probably a good...

new-worlds-observer

Finding Earth twins will probably require direct imaging, because the odds of finding a transiting Earth are so low. A good way to make that happen would be to use a big flower-shaped occulter, like in the proposed New Worlds Observer. "That's what we'd like to do," Seager said. "People are taking this seriously. It's part of active technology development." Something like this shield has been proposed for the James Webb Space Telescope, the planned successor to the Hubble that recently slid into a budget void. "Right now things are kind of a disaster with James Webb," Seager said. "It's not clear if there will be money for this new thing, but we're hopeful that things will work out. Some people are even hopeful that because James Webb is delayed, there will be more time for technology to develop." awesome simulator

Home made spectrometer tells you what rainbows mean

Don't tell the Double-Rainbow guy, but all those beautiful colors really can have a deeper meaning. That's because different chemicals reflect and absorb different wavelengths of light, leaving tell-tale patterns in the rainbow. If you know what colors specific chemicals absorb, you can look at the light reflected off a sample and use the rainbow to figure out what you've got. That's basically what a spectrometer does. And blogger Charles Soeder made his own.

How the Bandit, Coors and a bunch of Makers changed the course of booze history

So last night, while attempting to explain the plot of Smokey and the Bandit to my husband, it occurred to me that I didn't really understand the back story that spawned this, one of my favorite childhood films. Why did Bandit and Snowman (and Fred) have a long way to go and a short time to get there? There was beer in most parts of Georgia by the 1970s. And even if you were trying to get booze to a dry county, why start in Texas and only give yourself 28 hours?

DIY metallurgists liberate and scrap America's vital telephony substrate

Spiraling commodity prices and a plummeting US job market have apparently made digging up copper phone lines and selling them for scrappage an attractive proposition. AT&T; is offering $3K for information leading to the arrest of the copper scrappers who freelanced enough copper out of the fertile Atlanta soil to knock 7,000 people offline. It's part of a wider nationwide pattern of DIY five-finger discount recycling -- 100 miles of copper vanished from Appalachia, three hits to the same NJ station, and a $75K score also in the Garden State.
The FBI report shows that industry and local officials are taking countermeasures to help address the scrapper problem, but apparently much more needs to be done. For example, while a variety of physical and technological security measures have been taken there are limited resources available to enforce these laws, and a very small percentage of perpetrators are arrested and convicted. Additionally, as copper thefts are typically addressed as misdemeanors, those individuals convicted pay relatively low fines and serve short prison terms.

Atlanta isn't the only place seeing copper theft problems. In this report, Appalachian Power said more than 100 miles of copper wire has been stolen from the company's southern West Virginia facilities alone. Replacing stolen wire can cost up to $1 million a year, the utility stated. Other thefts have been reported all across the country in recent days. One location in New Jersey has been hit three times in the last two months seeing some $13,000 worth of copper stolen. A utility in the same state this week reported a $75,000 theft of the metal.

"Many features were abandoned from that, including the seemingly fully-armored boots, the flat stomach plate, the ammo belt, and even the structure and shape of the backpack itself."
  +
I'd say the ammo belt is a seperate addition to Master Chief's Mark V, just like with many of the additional ammo pouches in Halo: Reach such as Tactical/Recon or Tactical/LRP. This is just my own thought but MC's ammo belt looks like it is part of that black pouch on his back which is attatched just like how an armour ability is; so the belt itself could be pulled out of the black pouch and strapped tightly around MC's lowerwaist with ammo pockets then attatched to the belt. Makes sense to me.
  +
The flat stomach plate is still in the Reach model, but it seems to have been turned upside down.
  +
In response to many of the comments about the knee pads, it seems to me the default knee pads are default Mk. V just graphically different. They need a bit of colour though... dunno why Bungie left that out.
  +
The Reach model is just a graphically buffed Mk. V but in its default state it lacks the shoulder armour and the helmet for multiplayer reasons.
  +
Well that's the end of my nerdy anaylsis about small details of the Mark V. -- [[User talk:Joshua 029|Joshua 029]] 19:36, November 30, 2010 (UTC)

American Pickers' Mike Wolfe and vintage bicycles

Elginfromheap
Mike Wolfe of the History Channel's "American Pickers" is a junk archeologist even during his free time. Mostly, he feeds his jones for vintage bicycles. Over at Collectors Weekly, Ben Marks talked to Wolfe about old bikes, from Victorian high weelers to balloon-tire Schwinns:
Articles Wp-Content Uploads 2010 11 Wolfeonhighwheelercropped1 The late ’80s, early ’90s, was the heyday of balloon-tire bike collecting. That’s when Schwinn went crazy. This was before the bankruptcy and everything, and they were trying to create a museum in Chicago. Schwinn had warehouses full of its turn-of-the-century bikes, but they had failed to keep any of their balloon-tire stuff. So they hired James Hurd as a curator for their museum, and he started selling off all these turn-of-the-century bikes to enable for them to acquire balloon-tire ones.

I’d find a bike for $50, sell it for $500, take that $500 and do it again.

Guys like me were out there looking for balloon-tire stuff to feed that flame. In return, we were getting early turn-of-the-century bikes from the Schwinn collection. They had a big sale in downtown Chicago. Wood-rim bikes were stacked like cordwood in these warehouses.

Around that time I restored a bike called a Sterling. It was a turn-of-the-century, shaft-drive, wood-rim bike with rear suspension—there was a shock absorber up by the seat stays. I found the bike in pretty rough shape, but I just went full on with it and redid all the nickel and disassembled the bike and found a pair of new-old-stock wood rims. That was my prized possession for many years.

Dmitry Sklyarov and co. crack Canon's "image verification" anti-photoshopping tool

Dmitry Sklyarov and his colleagues at Elcomsoft have cracked the "image verification" system in high-end Canon cameras; this system digitally signs the photos you take so any alternations, "touch ups" or other modifications can be detected. Sklyarov (who became a cause celebre when he broke the DRM on Adobe's ebooks and was thrown in jail by the FBI at Adobe's behest) and his team have a sense of humor -- they've produced correctly signed images of astronauts planting the Soviet flag on the moon and the Statue of Liberty holding a sickle, among others.
The problem is that the HMAC sits in the camera's RAM in a de-obfuscated form and can be extracted, according to Sklyarov. It is also possible to extract the HMAC from the camera's Flash ROM and manually de-obfuscate it. Canon also released a third version of ODD, which Sklyarov was also able to break and forge the ODD. Elcomsoft has written a program that can analyze a camera's processor and firmware.

The problem is a design flaw and can't be fixed, according to Elcomsoft. Sklyarov said he was able to extract the HMAC keys for the following models: EOS 20D, EOS 5D, EOS 30D, EOS 40D, EOS 450D, EOS 1000D, EOS 50D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 500D and EOS 7D.

The problem, of course, is that for this system to work, the camera has to keep a secret from its owner -- and if one camera owner manages to extract the secret, all cameras fall. According to NetworkWorld, Sklyarov offers a silly remedy for this: "Canon should prevent its cameras from running non-Canon code to avoid the use of software tools by an attacker" -- that is, use DRM to control which code can run on a Canon camera (there is a thriving world of hobbyists who have improved the Canon firmware).

This might have some mistakes in it, but it's a great revalation (to my point of view). Main characters: Spartan-151 Dard, Spartan-2401 Alex, Spartan-092 Marcus (or ''Thunder Team''), Smart AI Merica, Rogue-Heretic Leader Sahn' Ossuz (''Sawn_O-suze''). I have not yet come up with the rest of the Rogue-Heretics names. The Rogue-Heretics are heretic that were all from te station that the Arbiter destroyed when he killed the Heretic leader, and were smart enough to leave. On head-count, there was 5 pairs of Magelekgolo, 49 Sangheili (12 Ultra, 13 Majors, 22 Minors, and 2 Spec-Ops), 7 Huragoks (all kidnapped), and 23 Unngoy (all majors). Their Vehicle's: 6 Phantoms and 4 ghosts. Their destination was unknown to all of them but Sahn', until they had left dangerous space, that is when he told them of a rogue-planet system he'd been tracking. This system had a single ''dead'', and molten surface planet, but 2 moons with atmospheres. They named the planet Malevolence, and the moons Heresy Minor and Major (since Heresy Major was signifagantly larger than Heresy Minor). Since Malevolance had lava covering over 95% of its surface, it heats Heresy Major and Minor to a point where they could sustain life, but it is unknown if life could evolve on it (if not already in the proccess of it). The atmospheres are compatible with what an Unngoy needs, so breathing apparatises are made for other species, unless inside a building where the atmosphere is artificially made to sustain a Sangheili, Magelekgolo, or Huragok.
