How Freedom Dies: Internet Poker
Hypocrisy:How Freedom Dies: Internet Poker
In 2010 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the same town of Hogan Jr.’s robbery, a woman was charged with stealing $68,500 from her employer “to fuel her addiction to scratch-off lottery tickets.” There was no response by Congress to outlaw state-run lotteries. Note: The amount of money online poker sites take from players (the rake) is usually around 1-5% of the money played. The amount of money state-run lotteries took from players in 2006 was 35% of the money played.Costly Hypocrisy:
America’s hypocrisy of allowing domestic online lotteries and horse betting, but not allowing foreign poker sites was found by the World Trade Organization to be in violation of its international trade agreements. Because of this the US had to settle complaints by Japan, Europe, and Canada. The settlements were not made public on the ridiculous basis of “national security interests,” but they are believed to be in the tens of billions of dollars.

Cutest Book Ever: ZooBorns Internet Craze Moves to Print
3. Cutest Book Ever: ZooBorns Internet Craze Moves to Print
November 2We were not at all surprised to see this gallery near the top of the list. Few things are more appealing and addictive than pictures of baby animals. This collection of images from the new book by the authors of the ZooBorns blog is pretty much ridiculous, as evidenced by the Edmonton Zoo's baby red pandas pictured above.
One of the greatest thing about ZooBorns, in addition to the extreme cuteness, is that it introduces us to animals we've never seen as babies, never seen before at all, or never even heard of -- like a gerenuk, an aye-aye or a fossa.

Venezuela passes new law drastically limiting internet freedoms
The new law expands 2004 restrictions on content in radio, television and print media. In an unprecedented move, it now also includes content from the Internet and electronic subscription services, making webpage managers "responsible for the information and content" published on their websites."Here's more about the law in Spanish on the government's website, including a video. It is meant to crack down on media content that "makes an apology of crime," "promotes unrest in the population" or "challenges legally established authorities." Webpage managers must now "establish mechanisms to restrict, without delay, the diffusion of messages... that are included in the ban." The measure increases fines imposed on media violations to "10 percent of the previous year's gross income," in addition to "72 hours of continuous suspension of services."
