Space Invaders Couch

I have no idea if Igor Chak's "Retro Alien" (ahem, Space Invaders) couch is comfortable, or if it looks as good in real life as it does in renders, but it sure does look good in them renders!

Retro Alien Couch by Igor Chak (Thanks, Eric!)

Hurricane Irene, As Seen From Space, Aug. 26, 2011

From NASA and NOAA, a "Full Disk Image of Earth" captured from the GOES-13 satellite on August 26, 2011. Hurricane Irene (NASA info page here) is now almost one-third the size of the US East Coast.

Nasa To Test Laser Communications System In Space

Optical communications technologies don’t work too well in dusty, polluted air, but the vacuum of space holds more promise, so NASA wants to test a laser communications system in orbit.

Human Slipspace velocities are far slower than those of the Covenant, able to carry a ship at an unimaginable speed of approximately 2.625 light years per day Velocity=Distance/time (V=10.5 light years/4 days=2.625 l/d), while Covenant ships can reach 912 light years per dayVelocity=Distance/time (V=38 light years/1 hour=38 l/h or 912 l/d). The capture of a Covenant Slipspace drive by John-117 and survivors of the Fall of Reach and survivors of the events at Halo may have increased the capabilities of these Human Slipspace technologies.

One example of the differences between speeds is comparing the Covenant cruiser "Ascendant Justice" with the UNSC Halcyon-class cruiser Pillar of Autumn. It took several weeks for the Pillar of Autumn to get from Reach to Installation 04, yet the Ascendant Justice could get from Installation 04 to Reach within thirteen hours.

It Came From Outer Space: Hyperthermophiles

Hyperthermophiles are microorganisms that can live in extremely hot conditions. Instead of photosynthesis, these organisms perform chemosynthesis to produce energy. Learn more about hyperthermophiles...

Earth as Art: Stunning New Images From Space

4. Earth as Art: Stunning New Images From Space

November 16

Earth is truly beautiful when viewed from space. But add some false color produced by satellite sensors, and it becomes hard to limit a gallery to 20 images (in fact ours has 22). These pictures, taken by the U.S. Geological Survey's Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 satellites, are so amazing that we ran them across the full width of the site. If you ever need new wallpaper for your desktop, these images are hard to beat.

See the full gallery.

Celebrate Hubble’s 20th With Best Space Image Ever

8. Celebrate Hubble’s 20th With Best Space Image Ever

April 23

The Hubble Space Telescope did not make an appearance in our most popular stories of 2009, so we are very happy to see this mind-blowing space photo of a star-forming region in the Carina Nebula in our top ten this year.

We think this shot rivals what may be Hubble’s most famous image, a shot of the Pillars of Creation taken in 1995. The enormous pillar of gas and dust in the image above is 3 light-years tall. The seam in the middle is the result of new stars forming and emitting powerful gas jets that are ripping the pillar apart.

With the last shuttle repair mission to Hubble completed, every image the telescope sends to us could be its last. So enjoy this one, and join us in crossing our fingers that Hubble has lots of life left in it yet.

Animation of Giant Iceberg Collision as Seen From Space

9. Animation of Giant Iceberg Collision as Seen From Space

March 5

Last year's top stories included two based on images of ice from space: a mysterious ice circle in Lake Baikal, and a gallery of images of glaciers taken by satellites and astronauts. So it's no surprise that this animation of colliding ice bergs is among the post popular stories this year.

The collision in early February of the 60-mile-long B-9B iceberg with the protruding tongue of the Mertz Glacier in East Antarctica is captured here in a series of satellite radar images. The crash created a second massive iceberg nearly 50 miles long and 25 miles wide, named C-28. The name means that it’s the 28th glacier since 1976 that has broken off from the quadrant of Antarctica that faces Australia.

Jingle Bells was the first song played in space

This harmonica, and these bells, are sitting in the Smithsonian Museum today. In 1965, however, they were in space, with astronauts Walter M. "Wally" Schirra Jr. and Thomas P. Stafford, who were doing a pre-Christmas mission aboard Gemini 6.

The territory encompassed by the Inner Colonies seems to stretch in at least a 10.5-light year radius around Earth, and the Outer Colonies beyond that. By 2468, the outermost colony was Harvest, at eleven light years from Earth - later, colonies were founded well beyond in the Outer Colonies. The furthest known UNSC colony is Beta Centauri, at 525 light years away. Colonies may have been settled after Harvest, or founded during the Human-Covenant War.

The UNSC's galactic territories were greatly reduced by the Covenant during the Human-Covenant War, with only Earth and a few scattered colonies left mostly intact by the end of the War in 2552. Since the end of the conflict, the UNSC is working to restore its galactic territories and has even recolonized some of its lost worlds.

An interactive history of American space travel

I absolutely love this. Spacelog.org is taking the radio transcripts from NASA missions, pairing them with great graphic design, and making the whole thing searchable and linkable. The result: An delightfully immersive perspective on history.
