Christmas Lights (Boing Boing Flickr Pool)

Boing Boing reader Camera John shared this photograph in the Boing Boing Flickr Pool, and explains:
I started zoomed in and out of focus. During the exposure I zoomed out and focused it. The best way to get it in focus during the exposure requires a little prep work. First zoom all the way out or to your stopping point and focus on the tree/subject. This is where everything should be lined up at, at the end of the exposure. Next take a small piece of masking tape an put it on the focusing ring. Put another piece, aligned with the focusing ring tape, on the zoom/focal length ring. Now you can see where to stop. Zoom in, unfocus the camera and take your shot. You might be out of luck if you don't have a dslr/slr.

All I want for Christmas is the $62,000 Twitter owes me

I'm not a greedy man, or an unreasonable one. (Nor, for that matter, am I insane. I'm NOT.) So when I sat down to place a monetary value on the content that's gone missing from my Twitter stream over the last week, an issue that Twitter has so far failed to acknowledge, I consistently rounded down. That's how I arrived at $62,000. I mean, I didn't just pull the figure out of a hat, although I did write some figures down and place them in a hat as a backup, along with some festively-wrapped holiday candy and some buttons. It's all here, in a post I wrote for Forbes.com: The roughly 4000 tweets that have vanished from my Twitter account have a value, and that value is sixty-two big ones, and that figure is more than fair to Twitter, despite the fact that I've given them every opportunity to make this thing right, which they have so far failed utterly to do.

So here's what I'm going to do: I'm crowdsourcing my outrage for Christmas. Do you have a Twitter account? If so, can you help me out? All you need to do is tweet the following:

@twitter @support You owe @billbarol $62,000. Pay up. http://t.co/e1jcou5

That's all there is to it. It's so simple. And the beautiful part is, it's not even remotely insane, it's NOT. Together we can make Twitter do what's right. And to show that my heart is in the right place. this is my pledge: Upon receipt of a certified check from Twitter in the amount of $62,000, I will in a relatively prompt manner donate $250 to a major charity that is legally registered in the US or her offshore waters. Because it's not about the money. And I am not insane. Merry Christmas! Viva la raza!

How a little girl's Christmas pageant with punch was ruined by Kenny Loggins

From the always insanely funny Hyperbole and a Half, a touching story of a little girl's demented attempt to produce a homebrew Christmas pageant with punch, ruined by unhelpful relatives and Kenny Loggins.

My mom, always wanting to nurture my creative side, agreed on behalf of everyone that we should go forward with the production. I would be playing the part of Mary and my dad would be Joseph. My aunt and my grandma would play the wise men. My mom would be filming. The dogs were slated to play the animals in the manger, but they kept trying to chew the eyes off of the doll I'd chosen to play Jesus, so their parts were cut and they were relegated to the bedroom for the duration of the production.

Once I had assigned everyone their parts, we set about the task of gathering costumes and props. Joseph was outfitted in a brown bath robe and Mary wore a blue blanket over her head like a cloak. The wise men, who were heavily intoxicated at that point in the evening, decided to dress themselves like gypsies.

I felt that the struggles of my character, Mary, needed to be emphasized. The audience really needed to understand that she was suffering. I constructed my costume accordingly.

What Some Advantages of Live Christmas Trees?

Live Christmas trees are living trees with root balls that are decorated for Christmas and the holiday season and planted once they have outlived their usefulness. They have a number of advantages over cut Christmas trees and artificial trees, and some environmental organizations support the use of live Christmas trees when at all possible. Many nurseries carry live trees which can be used for the holidays, and it is...

What Are Christmas Seals?

Many organizations offer seals, small stamps that are not valid as postage, to support their cause. These seals are usually issued around a major holiday, such as Easter or Christmas. In 1903, a Danish postmaster named Einar Holboll created the first Christmas Seal as a way to raise money and awareness to help stop the spread of tuberculosis (TB), which was a growing problem during that time. In their...
