World Technology Award 2011

Last night, Peter Madsen and I had a great time at the UN building at the World Technology Award 2011. As written in my previous blog post Copenhagen Suborbitals were nominated in the category “Space Corporate” together with fellow nominees: Canadian Space Agency, GeoEye, Sierra Nevada Corporation and SpaceX.

It pretty quickly got very intense over on the Mexican side, an F.B.I. spokeswoman, Andrea Simmons, told The Associated Press. Mexican officials, including President Felipe Calderón, have condemned the shooting, which the Border Patrol said was in self-defense after rock-throwing migrants confronted agents during an arrest. The teenager, Sergio Adrián Hernández, 15, was shot beside a railroad bridge connecting Ciudad Juárez with El Paso. Amnesty International said the shooting appears to have been a grossly disproportionate response and flies in the face of international standards that compel police to use firearms only as a last resort.

World History Timeline

This visualization of world history, with time and location as the major axes, is one of the simplest but best I've seen. By rendering empires in space and time, the relationships between some of the major social and cultural forces to shape the modern world are made clear and intuitive. With every history book, or historical novel I read, I ask myself - why don't they provide this map?

New page

Me and a friend of mine down in the community have been forging endlessly just having fun among other things and we think it's time we raised some requests for an improved forge world.

Here's a list of things we want:

1. More Forge space. Having plenty of water and open air is nice, but we need some more purely flat terrain, preferably having all of the biomes.

2. More Forge pieces, as in a bigger budget or a larger amount of pieces to work with. Also we would like Forge pieces that are designed to look like furniture (don't ask me).

3. The ability to set time and weather. I know it's a stretch, but just if you can.

4. Lower the kill boundaries for water covered areas to let us build submerged areas and maps. We would like to express a greater deal of creativity.

5. The ability to create streets without layering pieces (what I mean is presets like "Four Way Intersection" and "Left/Right Corner" and "Strait") so we can design cities and preset ways to get there for a better gaming experience.

6. The ability to create flyable Pelicans and bring back the Elephant for transport and different game play scenarios.

7. More Caves (not my request). Give us some more places to explore.

8. Bring back the old vehicles and some new ones like the Pelican, the Elephant, The Chopper, the AA Wraith, and the Prowler.

9. Give us the option to make cities and towns by giving us streets.

10. Give vehicles the ability to match the terrain. For example: Desert Camo Elephant and Frost-bitten Banshee

11. Give us normal vehicles like forklifts and trucks to give it a more realistic feel.

12. Give us the option of “ambient life”. Let us have the choice of there being specific animals for each biome, including underwater things like fish and coral reefs.

13. We need to be able to change a piece's colour entirely. No more steel blue maps with little highlights of colour.

14. Give us the ability to fight underwater if wanted.

Please consider this request from the community. We look forward from hearing back on our ideas.

P.S. If you could make it a DLC, I'd pay (almost) anything to get it.

After destroying the Proto-Gravemind, the Spirit of Fire's A.I Serina located Anders' signal, which was apparently in the middle of an ocean. While the Spirit was hovering over the sea, the doors of a huge submerged entry into the planet opened and several Foreunner Sentinels flew out. The Spirit of Fire became locked into a powerful docking mechanism and inevitably began a controlled 'fall' into the rift.Halo Wars cutscene "Open Sesame Part Two"

The remaining UNSC forces on the Shield World's surface had less than twenty minutes to fight their way past hundreds of Flood forms before being airlifted back to the Spirit of Fire. Flood Swarms made air support almost useless, forcing the Marines to use large numbers of Wolverines to clear the air before tanks and infantry could clear landing zones of Flood growths. They managed to slow down the Spirit of Fire's descent by disabling Forerunner pylon towers powering the docking system with Gremlin Combat Support Vehicles, giving them a little longer. After evacuating Alpha Platoon and Bravo Platoon, the team had to escort Charlie Platoon back to the firebase for extraction after their Pelican was forced to abort its run. After extracting all UNSC forces, the firebase was abandoned to the Flood and the Spirit of Fire began her descent.Halo Wars level, Shield WorldHalo Wars cutscene "Descent"

Harry Belafonte's lost, post-apocalyptic screen debut: "The World, the Flesh and the Devil"

Dwiff sez, "Harry Belafonte's screen debut may be of interest to the boingboingeratti - a precursor to The Quiet Earth in many ways - in which Harry Belafonte walks through haunting vistas of a depopulated New York searching for some signs that he is not the last man on Earth following a nuclear disaster. And like The Quiet Earth, he first discovers a woman, and then a man... Anyway, the film is finally out on DVD in a very nice remastered edition - has not looked this good in years."

Human rights organizations around the world condemn Wikileaks censorship

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Katitza Rodriguez has rounded up the responses of many human rights organizations around the world to the commercial and governmental attacks on Wikileaks. It coincides with EFF's new Say No to Online Censorship campaign.
• On December 10, International Human Rights Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights addressed this issue in her statement: "While it is unclear whether these individual measures taken by private actors directly infringe on states' human rights obligations to ensure respect of the right to freedom of expression, taken as a whole they could be interpreted as an attempt to censure the publication of information thus potentially violating Wikileaks' right to freedom of expression."

• Amnesty International ~ "Freedom of expression is an internationally recognized human right that limits the power of the state to prohibit the receipt and publication of information. The burden is on the state to demonstrate that any restriction is both necessary and proportionate, and does not jeopardize the right to freedom of expression itself."

• Human Rights First ~ "This issue transcends the particulars of the Wikileaks case. No matter what you think of Julian Assange, anyone who cares about Internet freedom should be concerned that in its zeal to cripple Wikileaks, governments and companies are taking steps in this case that pose a threat to fundamental rights."

• Reporter without Borders ~ "We stress that any restriction on the freedom to disseminate this body of documents will affect the entire press, which has given detailed coverage to the information made available by Wikileaks, with five leading international newspapers actively cooperating in preparing it for publication."
