Our Social Nature: The Surprising Science Of Smiles

All hail the powerful smile. The right smile, at the right time, wins friends and calms enemies. The smile held for too long, not long enough, flashed too intensively or too dimly, arouses suspicion, fear or anger.

What If Medical Science Cured All Diseases?

It's one of those things that seems too good too be true, but would a world full of cures be radically different from the one we know?

SocialFlow Tries to Crack Science of Twitter

That's exactly what SocialFlow hopes to prove. The New York-based startup, a sister company of Bit.ly and Chartbeat under Betaworks, claims to have cracked the puzzle of real-time conversation, and boasts that it can "take the guesswork out of what to say and when to say it on Twitter, Facebook and Google."

Ben Goldacre: bad science kills

Here's Ben "Bad Science" Goldacre presenting on how non-evidence-based medicine (that is, woo), can actually, no fooling, kill you and thousands of your friends.

Ben's book, oddly enough titled Bad Science, is great as well, and I highly recommend it. There's a chapter he had to take out due to litigation by a guy named Mathias Rath, who says vitamins can cure AIDS. Yes, you read that correctly. Ben posted that chapter on his website, and it may be one of the most important things ever written in the area of critical thinking. Lack of proper treatment for AIDS kills hundreds of thousands of people in Africa alone. Hundreds of thousands.

When people like Ben win, lives are saved. The more people who know about him, the better. He's a true hero of skepticism.

Some bad science can make you laugh, and some kills

Science and hope affirmation from XKCD

Today's XKCD, "Sickness," treats with faith, hope, and frailty, and is a stirring affirmation for science as a source of comfort in times of trouble. Randall Munroe, the strip's creator, recently went on hiatus due to a family illness; this, presumably, was inspired by it. Thanks for such a great strip, Randall, and I hope things are looking up for your family.

Wikileaks: Anonymous stops dropping DDoS bombs, starts dropping science

If this image is to be believed—and I have no reason not to, other than that I found it on the internet—the rebel squadrons behind Anonymous (attn. "news" hacks - that would be an entirely different group from Wikileaks and/or Wikipedia) are about to change their approach. So far, as we've witnessed, they have been launching point-and-click distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks at companies perceived as the enemies of Wikileaks. Those targets included Mastercard, Paypal, and Visa (companies that froze donation funding), and Amazon (which denied hosting services). The new approach suggests more sophisticated thinking. This new mission, apparently, is to actually read the cables Wikileaks has published and find the most interesting bits that haven't been publicized yet, then publicize them.

Open thread for science and math jokes!

It's Thursday afternoon and I'm feeling a bit silly, so I'm putting out a call for everyone to share their favorite groan-inducing, head-slapping, pun-laden science and math jokes. Here's a couple to start us out:

More fun with setting things on fire, ostensibly for science

Last week, we carefully observed the interaction between fire and steel wool. Much important data was gathered. I think we all learned something. Now, it's time to progress our research. Up next: What happens when you use a laser to ignite a piece of paper that's been suspended inside a clear balloon? The slow-motion replay is really the key in this experiment. Don't miss it.
